Google Adsense Custom and Responsive Ad Units:- Google Adsense is among the top revenue earning options for millions blogs and websites worldwide, it offers publishers or website owners several CPC and CPM based text and display Ads in many sizes to place in their websites and blogs. Google Adsense Ad sizes Does size matter?

Custom Size Google Adsense Ad unit

Now you can tinker with the width and height of a Google Adsense ad unit and can make your own custom sized ad slots, in mid Dec 2013, Google Adsense team announced that you can have custom size ads in your websites; they declared that you can have 434216 new ad sizes, but it has some limitations, you can set custom
Width minimum 120 pixels
Height minimum 50 pixels
Height and width cannot be more than 1200 pixels
Only one cane be greater than 300 pixel

But don’t cheer up, if you are planning to use unusual ad sizes, you must read this caution from Google itself
“Custom sized ad units may have a limited inventory of display ads available, which could have a negative impact on your earnings. If your site uses responsive design, we recommend that you use a responsive ad unit instead.” What it means that the most advertisers bids and competes for regular Ad sizes, due to this completion your regular ad size get higher CPC. So it is better for now to be stick with industry standards and ad sizes recommended by Google or opt for Responsive Ads.

What is Responsive Ad Unit?

Responsive Ad units are those which changes their size automatically as per the screen size of the device. Responsive Ad unit works only with responsive web designs or Responsive Themes. Not all themes available for blogs are responsive. You can check easily that whether your website or blog has responsive design or not, by doing a simple test. Open your website and click on “maximize” button in upper. Now try to reduce your browser width and height by holding left mouse button and dragging borders of browser window. If your website adjusts its display while reducing browsers window, this means that you have a responsive web design otherwise if your website remains static then it is not a responsive design and you cannot use responsive Ad Units.

If you have responsive web design than using a responsive ad unit code is a better option and it has several benefits for you.

How to make custom size Adsense units

You can make custom size ad units by either making new ad units or by changing existing Ad unit’s height and width dimension. Just keep the limitation in mind while setting height and width of an existing Ad unit.
To make custom size Adsense ad units, click on “+New Ad Unit” button as usually and then select either “Responsive Ad unit” or Custom Ad Size” option from Ad Size drop down menu.

Advance settings of Responsive Ad units

You can use Responsive Ad units in two modes smart sizing and advance. Smart sizing is recommended by Google and doesn’t require any changes in code. You can simply copy and paste as older Ad units.
Choose advance mode if you want an exact size of ad unit or you want to select a specific shape like Horizontal or Vertical. This is managed by CSS syntex code block.
You can select Advance Mode from the “Mode” drop down menu in the Ad code dialogue box.

You can change height and width between <style> </style>, remember the limitation of dimensions.

More development needed

Google Adsense publishers needs more developed solution for custom size ad blocks, now they cannot use Custom Ad Sizes due to low Ad inventory and not all have responsive web designs. Responsive Ad Unit is still in Beta, and it is wise to test these ad types before full implementation in entire website or either wait for a developed version.
Moreover the link units are not included in either custom size or Responsive ad unit.
